Don't Miss Tickets for Tennis Championships

Lawn tennis has been around for ages, in fact, its origin dates back to the 12th century. During its early days though, the palm of the hand is used to strike the ball. Ouch! At that time, it was still called by its French term, jeu de paume or game of the hand. Tennis rackets were introduced only in the 16th century, by which time its name was changed to tennis, still from another French term, "tenez," which means to hold. Sometime in 1859, the game of modern tennis was born, and the first tennis club in the world was established in Leamington Spa, in Warwickshire, England.

Tennis is a game that can be played by both young and old people. From France, it got transported to England and soon the rest of the world. It had evolved so much from being a weekend game played by amateurs to today's position as a professional sport for men and women that make top players millionaires in an instant, from the prize money to endorsement deals and sponsorships. Players play in singles events, doubles and mixed doubles. Playing surfaces have increased, as well. The four major tournaments, called the Grand Slams, which always draw huge ticket sales and tremendous crowds, are played on different surfaces.

The French Open is the only one that is played on red clay courts. Grass courts are used for Wimbledon, while the U.S. Open is played on acrylic hard courts. On the other hand, the Australian Open is played on synthetic hard courts. Each surface favors different players and different playing styles.

The game gave prominence to players of exemplary talents. In the early years there were players like Fred Perry, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson and Pancho Gonzales. Then there were Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Lleyton Hewitt, and Patrick Rafter. Current top players include Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. On the women's side, you'd have heard about Evonne Goolagong, Billy Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin. For a time, the women's game was dominated by the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, and Maria Sharapova. Now the women's game is more wide open, with champions coming from different countries, such as China, Asia and several European countries.

Tennis championships are always best sellers and fans cannot be faulted, for the game is truly a spectator sport, and gives you a high-adrenalin rush. Be sure to check out the tour schedules and reserve your tickets early.
